On March 26, 2021, an EF-4 tornado with peak estimated winds of 170 miles per hour tracked roughly 40 miles across Heard, Coweta and Fayette counties, spent 53 minutes on the ground in Georgia, reached about a mile wide at its widest, and passed directly through Newnan in the middle of the night. The National Weather Service office that surveyed it is itself in Peachtree City, at 4 Falcon Drive. There were no direct fatalities or injuries, which for a violent long-track tornado through a populated area is genuinely uncommon. What it left was a corridor of damaged and rebuilt housing and, just as consequential for outdoor structures, a corridor where the mature canopy came down. Five years on, that shows up in deck work in two ways: houses that were repaired or rebuilt have newer framing and known conditions, and yards that lost their oaks now take full afternoon sun where they used to be shaded.
