The pine-versus-composite argument is usually had at the wrong level. People compare a sample board in a showroom, look at the price difference, and decide on feel. Pressure-treated lumber is not one product. The end tag carries an AWPA use category, and that category is the specification that matters. UC4A is the minimum for ground contact, which covers structural posts and any joist or beam that will be in contact with the ground. What composite is now, and where it still fails
Modern composite decking is a wood-flour and polymer core with a hard polymer cap on the surface and, in better products, all four sides. The uncapped boards that gave composite a bad reputation fifteen years ago are largely gone from the market, and the reason matters: the failure was not the polymer, it was the exposed wood flour in the core taking on moisture and feeding surface mildew. A four-sided cap solves that. A three-sided cap leaves the bottom edge open, which is a real distinction on a deck sitting close to damp Piedmont clay and largely irrelevant on a second-story deck with airflow underneath. Cellular PVC removes the wood content entirely, runs cooler, weighs less, and costs more.
Where composite still needs respect is heat and movement. Wood decking is more forgiving. Anyone quoting a composite re-deck without measuring joist spacing has not looked.
The connections matter more than the boards. The ledger has to be a minimum nominal 2x8, through-bolted with half-inch bolts and washers into a 2-inch nominal band joist or an LVL rim bearing on a sill plate, and it cannot go onto brick, masonry or stone veneer, a cantilevered floor overhang or open-web trusses. Georgia's 2026 amendment to Section R507.9.1.3 spells out the predrill: a half-inch hole through the ledger and sheathing, and a five-sixteenths to three-eighths hole through the band joist. Above it, continuous flashing with a drip edge in copper set with copper nails, stainless, galvanized steel or UV-resistant plastic. Footings bear at least 12 inches below grade, and any footing within five feet of the house foundation has to bear at the same elevation as that foundation. Get those right and either surface lasts. Get them wrong and the surface is irrelevant.
What the tree permit and your HOA do to the schedule
